Dress for Workout Success
By Tracy Olgeaty Gensler, M.S., R.D.

Fall is the perfect time to invest in a few new pieces for your fitness wardrobe. It's not just about looking good-stylish and functional clothes that fit right can boost your mood and actually help motivate you to stick with your workout routine. Use these shopping tips and come home with A+ apparel.

Look your best. Those tattered sweat pants and that sloppy sweatshirt—leave them at home when you go shopping for new duds. Well-dressed, well-groomed women received the best service from sales clerks when shopping for clothing, suggests a study in Clothing and Textiles Research Journal.

Stick with basics. Get comfortable, moisture-wicking bottoms in a basic black (like flattering yoga pants) that you can match with a rainbow of color tops.

Buy the right bag. Purchase a roomy, stylish bag to transport your workout gear. Leave the plastic shopping bags for the supermarket!

Invest in a good bra. Most department stores and specialty sports stores have knowledgeable sales staff that can help you select the right sports bra for you.

Select the perfect shoe. A good cross trainer works for weight training, the elliptical and the exercise bike. If you're a runner or walker, it's critical to have a fitting, so look for a specialty store near you.

Don't forget socks. Be sure to buy well-fitting, cushioned socks for running and walking as well as other high-impact cardiovascular activities.

September Produce
September Produce
Fresh, fall produce arrives in grocery stores and farmer's markets this month! Try some of these tasty picks:

Apples Usually the gala is the first to make an appearance. Have one as a snack or pack one in your child's lunchbox.

Arugula Mix this delicate salad green, which ranges from extremely spicy to merely flavorful, does not like the heat of summer. Mix it in with other greens or enjoy it solo.

Pears These freshly-picked fruits are often sweet and juicy. Eat them on their own, or add slices to your salad.

Shallots A member of the onion family, shallots offer an intense, sweet but not overpowering taste. Try roasting them in their skin until tender and use them to enhance the flavor of meat, poultry and veggies.

Shell Beans This protein-packed pick is both delicious and versatile. You can use them for the main part of your meal, or serve them as a side. Though it takes some time to clean and shell the beans, they taste fresher than dried beans.
